Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services

The Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) is a local charitable organization founded in 1979 as a branch of the Arab Family Organization in the Gulf region, aiming to advance the Arab family and develop the social services it needs as authorized by decree number 6/1981, issued on 11th March 1981, by the Government of Sharjah. For various reasons the Arab Family Organization was not successful and could not set up branches in other Arab countries. The Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services continued their services by providing care and rehabilitation for individuals with disabilities in the United Arab Emirates. This operation continued until His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammed Al-Qasimi, Member of the High Council and Ruler of Sharjah, issued a decree on October 10, 1995 under edict number 4/1995. This stated that the City is to be an independent ground for the care of the handicapped with the capacity to conduct all legal procedures necessary to fulfill its aims and objectives and to enjoy financial and administrative independence. Today, under the umbrella of the Family Supreme Council in Sharjah, SCHS serves more than two thousand persons with special needs. Mission Success for SCHS means changing the society’s attitude and behavior towards the disabled and affecting government policies in favor of those with special needs. It means paving the way to a bright future for both mentally and physically challenged children, giving them confidence and a chance to live in society with equal opportunities. Objective Through its flexible and comprehensive plans and its unyielding strategy, SCHS aims at providing education, care, training and rehabilitation to children and adults with special needs, regardless of the level of disability and yet within the limits that it allows. It also aims at providing job opportunities for people with special needs. Considering the fact that their family is the ideal environment for them, SCHS provides families with guidance and counseling. In addition, it aims at educating the public on disability issues in hope of preventing future disabilities and bridging the gap between the disabled and the rest of the society. Services The SCHS provides services for more than 2000 persons with disabilities. The service is provided from birth to 25 years of age and from all nationalities, as the City follows a no-reject policy, on the condition that the person benefits from the available services.
