Once a musician has been bitten by the performance bug, all they want to do is travel the world and play their music to different audiences. Embarking on a tour within your home country can be nerve wracking enough for some people, taking the show abroad however and touring in different cultures, playing to audiences who don’t speak the same language as you, is as enriching as it is challenging.
Even after you have decided that touring abroad is something that you want to do, you then need to identify a country suitable for hosting your band. There are a number of different criteria that you can use to make the determination as to where you should go. The following list considers a number of different aspects of the place but is focused primarily on their attitude towards musicians.
South Africa
South Africa has always been a very hospitable place for touring musicians at all levels. Unlike the United States there is a much greater awareness and appreciation for culture more generally among the population.
South Africans like to live slow and leisurely lives, perhaps unsurprising given how hot it gets there! This way of life usually gels well with musicians who are, let’s face it, generally a pretty laid-back bunch.
Ireland
The Irish know how to have a good time and touring Ireland as a musician is every bit as enchanting and unique an experience as you could hope for. Hospitality is a cornerstone of Irish life and they are a very welcoming and generous nation of people.

Austria
Austria is one of the most underappreciated tourist destinations in Europe. This isn’t so surprising once you experience the place for yourself and come to realize that its people are quite reserved in general. This changes when they’re in party mode, however, and gigs to Austrian audiences are full of energy. Good energy from the crowd can make all the difference to a gig.
Belgium
Another greatly underappreciated European destination, Belgium is a small country with a unique culture that blends French and Dutch influences. They love their music, in particular alternative acts. Belgians are prolific beer drinkers but are also very friendly and hospitable regardless of alcoholic intake.
Belgian promoters have a reputation for being efficient and easy to work with which takes a great deal of the stress out of touring.
UK
The UK has been at the forefront of innovation in music in the post-World War II era. As the birthplace of both punk and heavy metal, as well as trip-hop and several other more niche genres, the United Kingdom has a great deal of musical history and its audiences are famously discerning.
When you feel that the time is right for your band to make their mark overseas and embark upon a tour to new and unexplored lands, then you should consider one of the five places listed above.
