Sharjah Museums

With over 20 interactive and engaging museums, the history of this ancient land is carefully preserved for visitors to enjoy. Spread throughout the emirate of Sharjah, the museums cover Islamic arts, culture, archeology, heritage, science, marine life, and flora and fauna, as well as the history of Sharjah and the region.



Sharjah Hisn (fort) Is the former residence of the Al Qassimi ruling family and holds important significance to local people. It dates back to 1820 when it was both a place of celebration and mounting. It provided shelter during fearful war times but was also a place of pride. Today this unique building is an excellent example of the art of Arabic architecture. The museum contains exhibits of weapons, tools and old photographs.



Sharjah’s Museum of Islamic Civilization Is the first of its kind in the UAE. It contains more than 5,000 precious artifacts from great Islamic scientists and artists. The museum’s collection includes treasures from the advent of Islam up to the present day, and some of the objects are on public display for the very first time. The museum is committed to displaying, interpreting, researching and further developing the collections for all visitors, both local and international, serving to stimulate understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of Islamic art, history, science and culture.



Sharjah Aquarium Take an underwater journey and discover captivating displays of Sharjah’s sea life. The museum is home to more than 250 species of animals and plants, all of which are indigenous to the waters of Sharjah’s east and west coasts. Al Mahatta Museum Explore the history of flight and the development of aviation in the Gulf. In 1932, the first airport in the Gulf opened in Sharjah as a staging post for commercial flights en route from Britain to India. Today the airport houses Al Mahatta Museum, where visitors can enjoy audio-visual displays depicting airport operations and the development of Sharjah city during the 1930s and experience first hand this fascinating period of Sharjah’s history.



Sharjah Archaeology Museum Discover the changing cultures and environment of the region’s inhabitants from the Stone Age to the present day through displays of artifacts, coins, jewellery, pottery and ancient weapons. Be part of a dig in progress, explore models of burial sites, houses and tombs, and view examples of the first forms of writing in this area.



Sharjah Maritime Museum The sea has played a key role in Sharjah’s development and was the primary reason for the first settlers choosing the city’s location over 6,000 years ago. Explore traditional, wooden, seafaring dhows used for fishing, trading, and pearling, each designed according to their use.



Sharjah Art Museum The mission is too enrich the cultural life of the Sharjah community, and its regional, national and international visitors, through fascinating art collections, programs and facilities. The Fine Art Library located at Sharjah Art Museum consists of over 4,000 titles written in Arabic, English and other languages along with visual and audio m material.



Sharjah Calligraphy Museum The only museum in the Arab world devoted entirely to calligraphy. The museum serves to inspire visitors through the art of calligraphy and to raise the form to new standards both locally and internationally.



Sharjah Science Museum Test your flexibility, create cartoons, study the stars, operate a digger, build a house and get involved with all kinds of activities. There are endless exhibits and interactive displays, all designed to stimulate and inspire you. Bait Al Naboodah Is a unique example of a traditional Emirati house and is a fascinating place to visit as it preserves the values and traditions of society in Sharjah. The two-storey house, built in 1845, belonged to a pearl trading family and displays traditional Gulf architecture from an age before modern-day comforts. Al Eslah School Established in 1935, this school was the first formal educational institute to be opened in Sharjah and welcomed pupils from all over the Gulf region.



Sharjah Natural History & Botanical Museum This high-tech museum teaches visitors about plant and animal life through interactive displays. Different halls depict the region’s natural history, with displays of native desert and marine ecosystems.



The Arabian Wildlife Centre Is the only ‘zoo’ in the Emirates which exhibits all the animals naturally occurring in the Arabian Peninsula, both current and extinct. The tour takes you through the reptile, fish, and insect house, where many of the Arabian snakes, including the venomous vipers and adders, monitor lizards and chameleons, plus common insects such as camel spiders and scorpions, are exhibited.
