(8 July 2019)

The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has revealed the success of a national medical team at Al Qassimi Hospital for Women & Children to save the life of a Asian girl child and restore her normal growth rate, similar to the children of her age.

The girl was suffering from a short bowel syndrome caused by repetitive bowel resections, liver dysfunction, some bacterial infections, and pancreatic insufficiency.

Dr. Kalthoum Al Baloushi, Director of MoHAP’s Hospitals Administration, pointed to the high-caliber medical team who received the girl following the failure to treat her at private hospitals and refusal of other hospitals to undertake her treatment.

She explained that Al Qassimi Hospital for Women & Children is considered MoHAP’s sole reference to receive and treat pediatric digestive disorder cases, stressing MoHAP’s keenness on the constant development of its hospitals as per the highest international standards, as well as the empowerment of its national medical and technical staff to perform complicated and rare surgeries.

Treatment Plan

For her part, Dr. Safia Al Khaja, Director of Al Qassimi Women’s and Children’s Hospital, pointed out that the medical team, headed by Dr. Yasser Rashed, Consultant of Pediatrics, Pediatric Hepatology, Gastroenterology, and nutrition, has designed the treatment plan for the girl with the involvement of her parents in the entire treatment details and also keeping them aware of all the medical consequences of their daughter’s case.

The treatment initiated with creating a diet plan including all types of nutrition, such as tube feeding until the team managed to restore the normal nutritional status of the girl.

The Impact of Treatment on the Liver and Pancreas

Al Khaja further continued: “Several challenges have arisen throughout the treatment journey. This included Cirrhosis of the liver, liver dysfunction, repetitive bacterial infections, pancreatic insufficiency, vitamin deficiency and Increased loss of body fluids.

The medical team’s efforts have succeeded in restoring the normal functions of the liver and the girl was completely recovered through the constant follow-up by the competent medical team who is monitoring the nutritional status of the girl and the treatment of liver and pancreas.

The girl has restored her normal growth rate and her medical conditions have also improved due to her adherence to the treatment.

Removing a Battery from Child’s Stomach

In the same context, the medical team has managed to safely remove a battery from the stomach of an Emirati child. An endoscopy was performed afterward, and there was no need for surgical intervention.

It’s noteworthy that this is not the first or only case of foreign body ingestion among children. In addition to swallowing coins and batteries, several cases among children were treated after ingesting magnets, pointed objects and jewelry.

Parents’ Vigilance to Protect their Children

Al Qassimi Hospital for Women & Children emphasizes the importance of vigilance by parents to help keep their children safe and protect them from these injuries which may cause dangerous complications, such as severe gastrointestinal infections and exposure of the child to burn in case of ingesting batteries.

The Liver, Gastroenterology and Pediatric Nutrition Department at Al Qassimi Hospital for Women & Children provides the diagnosis and treatment of liver disease in children. It’s the only hospital that provides this critical specialty in a professional way. In addition to Gastroenterology disease, treatment of food allergy and therapeutic feeding of children. These services help achieve MoHAP’s objectives in terms of fulfilling patient needs from all society segments and in different medical specialties.
