Sharjah's Road and Transport Authority has started a comprehensive study into its entire road system.

Under the new revision plan, road lights, intersections, pedestrian crossings and surveillance cameras in the emirate will be examined with the goal of developing and improving traffic flow in the city.

Yomna Al Zaabi, from the Road Transport Authority, said that the department will assign foreign consultants to carry out a detailed investigation into all the elements that make up the city's road system. The initiative also aims to improve the traffic control system and its related equipments like traffic lights.

The Authority also added that any findings uncovered by the study will prompt an action plan to ease traffic flow in the emirate, with the aim of making commuting for locals, residents and visitors more pleasurable.

Al Zaabi said that the Authority assigned Atkins, one of the world's leading design, engineering and project management consultancies, to oversee the 6 month project, adding that the company will be utilising smart transport systems to examine all aspects regarding road infrastructure in the city, and will later accept recommendations made by consultants on traffic congestion, pollution and traffic accidents.

 Al Zaabi also highlighted the Authority's commitment to making continuous efforts to decrease congestion and increase safety on Sharjah roads.
