Travel Nursing - Have You Got What It Takes?

When you think about becoming a nurse, most people assume that means working right here in the United States in some sort of healthcare facility such as a clinic or hospital. While that may be the case for the majority of students going for their nurse practitioner doctorate degree, it’s important to note that that same degree can help open career doors outside of the country.

Did you know those same online doctoral nursing programs that you are so heavily involved in through a school such as Bradley University will also prepare you for life as a travel nurse? That’s right, all that same training and knowledge can be used to build a career for you that allows you to travel, see the world, and help those in need. So, before you set your sights on career in travel nursing it may be helpful to take a closer look and see if you’ve got what it takes to succeed.

Make Sure You Have the Basic Qualifications

Before you set out in your travels you'll need to make sure you have the very basic qualifications/training/education. Typically, that means references, one year of clinical experience, and a current RN license. This means you may need to stay in the country for your first year on the job and build enough experience and references before you can start your travel nursing career. Look at it as a stepping stone and you’ll probably be surprised at how fast the time flies by.

Do You Know a Second Language?

Another skill that can help you in the world of travel nursing is to know another language. If English is your only language, it’s a good idea to start learning another one as soon as possible. Ideally you want to pick the language from the area you have your eye on working. You can take an evening language course, an online course, or just learn on your own time through one of the many language tutorial apps now available.

Do You Enjoy New Experiences?

As a travel nurse, you will be immersing yourself in experiences, cultures, locations, and destinations that you probably know very little about. It’s important to be the type of person that can roll with these changes, embrace them, and not feel flustered by them. The role of a travel nurse can be very stressful on those who aren’t up to the task.

Is Your Family Willing to Travel with You?

If you already have a family, it's also important to factor them into the decision-making process. Will they be traveling with you? If not, it can be awfully difficult to head off on your own. This is exactly why so many travel nurses tend to be young and not yet married with children, or empty nesters whose children have all grown and moved out.

It May be Exactly What You’re After

Travel nursing can provide you with wonderful and eye-opening experiences allowing you to travel the world and discover all new places, sights, and people. It could just be exactly what you’re after.
