Sharjah Looks To Repeat Its Success At WTM
(2 November 2011)

Sharjah is looking forward to another stellar performance at the World Travel Market in London later this week, consolidating its gains this year and tapping European tourism markets. The Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority is heading a high profile delegation of government officials and representatives of travel and tourism sector to the WTM 2011, the premier global travel and tourism event taking place in London from 7 to 10 November 2011.

The four-day event, one of the most prestigious international events on the Authority’s agenda, is expected to draw more than 50,000 visitors while representing travel and tourism agencies from over 200 countries around the world. Some 3,000 members of international media are to cover the event.

Sharjah’s delegation for the WTM 2011 is headed by SCTDA Chairman Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qassimi, and includes representatives from the Sharjah Airport Authority, Sharjah Media Centre, Sharjah Museums Department, Shurooq (Al Qasba), Hotel Ramada Sharjah, Radisson Blu, Orient Tours and Oceanic Hotel & Resort, Khor Fakkan.

SCTDA chief Sheikh Sultan Al Qassimi stressed the importance of taking part in the world’s largest travel and tourism event saying, "Our presence at the WTM for the eighth time is part of our strategy to promote Sharjah around the world and keep ourselves abreast of the latest trends and developments in the industry. This is the time to interact, network and exchange ideas with leading industry players and professionals on boosting the tourism industry. The WTM 2011 provides us with a great opportunity to showcase a spectrum of Sharjah’s distinctive tourism products and enhance its profile on the global tourism map."

Al Qassimi noted that Sharjah pays great attention to the European tourism market in general and the British market in particular. "Sharjah remains one of the most prominent destinations favoured by the European tourists. Indeed, following visitor patterns in recent years, of the international tourists visiting during the first half of this year, 305,226 visitors were from Europe representing 40% of the total number of visitors. This reflects the growing importance of Sharjah’s tourism product for the European market, and the global tourism market," said Al Qassimi.

This year’s participation in the WTM follows the successful show last year attracting thousands of visitors and the gains Sharjah’s tourism sector has made this year defying global slowdown. The Sharjah stand at the WTM 2011 will have a unique design celebrating the emirate’s heritage and tourist attractions. The 230 square meters stand will offer WTM visitors all the information about Sharjah and various publications focusing on the emirate will be on the offer to visitors in both Arabic and English.
