EIDA Enrolls 2.4 Million Nationals And Residents In Population Register And The ID Card Programme In 2011

A total of 2.4 million Emiratis and expatriate residents registered in the Population Register and the ID card programme in 2011 compared to 1.1 million in 2010, according to figures released by Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA) in its annual report 2011. The 178-page report said that EIDA last year delivered 2.77 million ID cards to their owners against 1.26 million ID cards in 2010. In a forward under the title ’’2012 : Towards delivery of Goals’’, Dr. Eng. Ali Mohamed Al Khouri, Emirates EIDA Director General, said the report offered a fresh opportunity for EIDA to read and analyse its experiment and learn lessons so as to address challenges with the aim of realising EIDA 2010-2013 strategic plan with full transparency. EIDA’s project includes the establishment of a modern population register in order to facilitate the obtainment of government services as well as to provide the required information for supporting decision making, strategic planning and the allocation of sources in all vital sectors in the UAE. Through this project, EIDA is also responsible of the issuance of electronic identity cards for the whole population in the country, nationals and residents, in order to verify and confirm the identity of each individual through the personal number and the smart card related to the biological features of the individual. By adopting cutting edge and state- of -the- art technology in its business, Emirates Identity Authority is keen to play a distinctive and active role in the sustainable development and civilisational and economical growth of the country through a nationwide and accurate population register that supports the government in its strategic planning which will contribute in elevating the UAE to its well deserved position amongst the advanced countries in the world.
