Record Breaking Earth Hour Reaches Every Corner Of The Globe And Beyond
On Saturday night the UAE joined the global community in the world’s largest environmental movement; Earth Hour,adding to the record-breaking 150 countries that participated in the symbolic lights off event.
Emirates Wildlife Society in association with WWF called upon individuals, governments, schools and companies across the UAE to switch off their lights and join in various public events happening across all seven emirates. Celebrations in Abu Dhabi took place on the Corniche and the public watched as the entire city was plunged into darkness. Similarly the downtown area in Dubai was lit by a candle light march as a public procession weaved through the Burj Park. In Sharjah, families gathered at Al Majaz Park, whilst residents of Fujairah floated lanterns to mark the momentous occasion.
The UAE´s most iconic landmarks united for Earth Hour by switching off their lights, including Burj Khalifa and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. These joined other popular landmarks around the world including Sydney´s Opera House, the Great Wall of China and the Eiffel Tower.
This year, Earth Hour not only reached 6,494 towns and cities across the globebut for the first time in history it reached outer space as ESA Astronaut Andre Kuiperstweeted images from the International Space Station.
